SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 308
Celebrating the life of Macon Peyton Booker.

WHEREAS, Macon Peyton Booker, native son, was born on May 1, 1921, in Amelia County and passed from life to death on January 16, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Macon Peyton Booker was a graduate of Southwest Missouri State College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation, and he later served with honor for 26 years in the United States Air Force and the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, he provided leadership and support for several community and statewide endeavors, and as an assistant trainer for boxers in the military, he constantly carried his signature boxing gloves as his trademark to advocate and motivate federal, state, and local policymakers and the governor to appropriate funds to dedicate property for the Amelia County Veterans Cemetery as a tribute to those who served the nation to protect American freedoms; and

WHEREAS, at an early age, Macon Peyton Booker became a member of the Union Branch Baptist Church of Amelia and served faithfully until his death; and

WHEREAS, he was an avid officiant at area softball, basketball, and football games, and was skilled in the culinary arts at which he became proficient during his tour of duty in the armed services and his experience as a restaurateur in Missouri; and

WHEREAS, upon his return to Amelia County, Macon Peyton Booker was deeply concerned about the well-being of his neighbors and demonstrated visionary leadership and offered enthusiastic support for the Amelia community, representing District 1 for four years as a member of the Amelia County Board of Supervisors; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Macon Peyton Booker was actively involved in many civic and community organizations, among them the Central Piedmont Action Committee, currently known as HOPE, the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Amelia County Democratic Party; as an employee of the Amelia County Department of Social Services, specializing in finding employment services for the county’s unemployed, and as a substitute teacher for the Amelia County Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, Macon Peyton Booker’s life, accomplishments, and spirit of community service are worthy of emulation, and his passing is mourned by his family, friends, neighbors, and the citizens of Amelia County; and

WHEREAS, Macon Peyton Booker’s legacy of sacrificial service to the people of Amelia County and the Commonwealth will be forever remembered by all who loved, knew, and served with him; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Macon Peyton Booker; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Macon Peyton Booker in order that they may be apprised of the General Assembly’s admiration and deep respect for his memory and dedicated service to the people of Amelia County and the Commonwealth.
