089797228WHEREAS, Leigh Buckner Hanes, Jr., of Roanoke, a respected citizen and outstanding attorney and community leader, died on August 15, 2008; and
WHEREAS, a Roanoke native son, Leigh Buckner Hanes, Jr., was born on April 4, 1918, the son of the late Lillian and Leigh B. Hanes, Sr., graduated from Jefferson High School, earned a bachelor’s degree from Hampden-Sydney College, and received a law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law; and
WHEREAS, during World War II and afterwards, Leigh Hanes served as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1943 to 1949, as well as with the United States Army Counter Intelligence Corps; and
WHEREAS, Leigh Hanes practiced law in the Roanoke area with the law firm of Hanes and Hanes from 1951 to 1956 and was a member of the Roanoke City Council, serving as vice mayor from 1953 to 1956; and
WHEREAS, a knowledgeable attorney with exceptional experience, Leigh Hanes served first as assistant United States attorney from 1956 to 1959 and then as United States attorney from 1969 to 1975 for the Western District of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, committed to the well-being of his community and the best interests of his fellow citizens, Leigh Hanes was the Commonwealth’s attorney for Botetourt County from 1976 to 1979 and attorney for the Town of Troutville from 1981 to 1986; and
WHEREAS, throughout his life and career, Leigh Hanes gave his time and expertise to many civic organizations, serving as a board member of the Foundation for Roanoke Valley, Botetourt Historical Society, State Scenic River Advisory Board, and Roanoke Regional Partnership; and he was the cofounder and chairman of the Roanoke Valley Conflict Resolution Center; and
WHEREAS, always willing to help his fellow residents in need, Leigh Hanes was a member of the Masonic Order and the Rotary Club of Roanoke; and
WHEREAS, Leigh Hanes was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Roanoke before joining Fincastle Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder and was active in the church’s many missions in the community; and
WHEREAS, Leigh Hanes will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his devoted wife, Frances Hilton Hanes; his three children, Whitney, Tom, and David and their wonderful families, including eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; his numerous friends and colleagues; and the citizens of the City of Roanoke; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Leigh Buckner Hanes, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Leigh Buckner Hanes, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
