SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 300
Celebrating the life of Jessie Hanby Key.

WHEREAS, Jessie Hanby Key of Martinsville and formerly of Stuart, a beloved citizen and respected health care administrator for nearly 50 years, died on October 9, 2008; and

WHEREAS, born in Patrick County on November 18, 1916, Jessie Hanby Key was the daughter of the late Sallie Padgett and Charles Orlando Hanby; and

WHEREAS, Jessie Hanby Key graduated from Stuart High School in 1935 and the Martin Memorial School of Nursing in Mount Airy, North Carolina, in 1938; and

WHEREAS, Jessie Hanby Key began her long and distinguished health care career as a registered nurse at Martin Memorial Hospital in Stuart; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to her profession and to caring for others, Jessie Hanby Key worked at Martinsville General Hospital for 20 years and was a member of the staffs of Asheboro Hospital and Duke University Hospital in North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Jessie Hanby Key was licensed as a nursing home administrator in Virginia by the American College of Nursing Home Administrators; and

WHEREAS, in 1960, Jessie Hanby Key and her husband, the now late Clarence L. Key, Sr., established Blue Ridge Nursing Home, Inc., in Stuart, where she served as administrator until 1981; and

WHEREAS, Jessie Hanby Key became an active member of the Virginia Health Care Association (VHCA) in 1961, chaired the organization’s statewide convention in 1966, and received the VHCA Administrator of the Year award in 1972; and

WHEREAS, Jessie Hanby Key worked very hard on the local, state, and national levels to achieve quality health care for low-income families, older citizens, and persons with mental health problems, serving as a board member of the Health System Agency of Southwest Virginia and as a representative to the 1980 White House Conference on Aging; and

WHEREAS, Jessie Hanby Key was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Martinsville and was active in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Jessie Hanby Key will be fondly remembered for her strength, keen intelligence, and compassionate nature and greatly missed by her daughter Katherine K. “Katie” Connelly, her son Clarence Lester Key, Jr., and their wonderful families, including her four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; her many other loving family members and friends; and the citizens of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Jessie Hanby Key; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jessie Hanby Key as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
