Celebrating the life of William Randolph Dyer.

WHEREAS, William Randolph Dyer of Martinsville, a former law-enforcement officer and electoral board vice-chairman, died on July 9, 2008; and

WHEREAS, William Dyer was born to Otis McKinley Dyer and Fannie Lee Saunders Dyer on October 7, 1925, in the Henry County community of Bassett; and

WHEREAS, during World War II, William Dyer proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corps; and

WHEREAS, William Dyer married his beloved wife, Viola Prillaman, and the couple had five wonderful children; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong law-enforcement officer, William Dyer began his distinguished career as a trooper with the Virginia State Police, where he worked diligently and conscientiously to protect Virginia’s citizens; and

WHEREAS, drawing on his skills and experience, William Dyer then moved to the United States Treasury Department’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, where he worked as a special agent for 21 years until his retirement; and

WHEREAS, mindful of the needs of the community, William Dyer generously gave of his time and talent by serving on the Henry County Electoral Board, including being vice-chairman and secretary; and

WHEREAS, William Dyer will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and greatly missed by his loving wife, Viola; their five children, Valinda, Kathryn, Anita, Randolph, and Vernon and their families; and his numerous friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a respected law-enforcement officer, public servant, and outstanding Virginian, William Randolph Dyer; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William Randolph Dyer as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
