SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 288
Commending Jack and Jill of Norfolk.

WHEREAS, Jack and Jill of Norfolk celebrated 60 years of serving children in 2008; and

WHEREAS, as part of Jack and Jill of America, an African-American family organization in the United States, Jack and Jill of Norfolk is one of 218 chapters in 35 states that provides educational, cultural, civic, recreational, and social opportunities for children ages two to nineteen to help them reach their full potential; and

WHEREAS, chartered in 1948, the Norfolk chapter of Jack and Jill was organized to provide the children of the Norfolk area with opportunities such as cultural events, social activities, and field trips to neighboring cities that were unavailable to them due to segregation; and

WHEREAS, the older children who participate in Jack and Jill also serve as mentors and role models to the younger children, developing important leadership skills and friendships that often carry over into adulthood; and

WHEREAS, Jack and Jill of Norfolk has evolved over the years into a family organization that currently has 31 families; and

WHEREAS, Jack and Jill of Norfolk now also provides important outreach activities, including educating youth about their heritage and observing Kwanzaa every year; and

WHEREAS, the outstanding contribution of Jack and Jill of Norfolk over the years to the children of Norfolk is due in large part to the efforts of the leaders of the local chapter, who shared a vision for and commitment to their children; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Jack and Jill of Norfolk on the occasion of its 60th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the leaders of Jack and Jill of Norfolk as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for their commitment to the children of Norfolk.
