SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 286
Celebrating the life of Ruby Warren Thompson.

WHEREAS, Ruby Warren Thompson of Windsor, a beloved citizen, community supporter, and outstanding educator for 32 years, died on October 2, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Ruby Thompson was born in Isle of Wight County, the daughter of the late Sandy R. and Hattie K. Warren; and

WHEREAS, Ruby Thompson graduated from Isle of Wight Training School, attended Norfolk State University, and received a bachelor’s degree from Virginia State University in Petersburg; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated and exceptional classroom teacher for 32 years, Ruby Thompson was devoted to her students at Smithfield Elementary School until her retirement in 1988; and

WHEREAS, Ruby Thompson was a faithful member of Chapel Grove United Church of Christ in Windsor, where she was a deaconess, a member of the church council board, a leader in the Sunday School, and active in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, always ready to help her fellow citizens, Ruby Thompson generously gave her time and many talents as a member of the boards of Thompson Hospitality, local social services, and the School House Museum, as well as an enthusiastic volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Cancer Transport; and

WHEREAS, a kind and compassionate woman, Ruby Thompson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her daughter, Benita T. Byas, and her two sons, Fred D. Thompson, Jr., and Warren M. Thompson; her numerous loving family members, including her three grandchildren and her sister, Lois Duck; her many friends and admirers; and the congregation of Chapel Grove United Church of Christ; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Ruby Warren Thompson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ruby Warren Thompson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
