094333276WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Clifton R. Wilson of Chesapeake, a respected citizen and beloved former pastor of New Union Chapel AME Church in Norfolk, died on September 4, 2008; and
WHEREAS, Clifton Wilson, who was born in Norfolk and attended public schools, developed a great dedication to his fellow citizens and his community at an early age; and
WHEREAS, Clifton Wilson worked as a loyal employee of the City of Virginia Beach, retiring after 28 years of outstanding service; and
WHEREAS, as a faithful member of Campbell’s Chapel AME Church in Virginia Beach, Clifton Wilson found himself embarking on a spiritual journey that would lead him to the ministry; and
WHEREAS, called to serve the church and his neighbors, Clifton Wilson completed divinity training and joined New Union Chapel AME Church on Carrolton Way as the church’s inspirational pastor; and
WHEREAS, under Dr. Wilson’s able leadership, New Union Chapel AME Church underwent many changes and grew in numbers and in its service to the Norfolk community; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Wilson was active in many civic and church organizations over the years, and he received numerous accolades for his many contributions to missions and charitable causes; and
WHEREAS, over a long and fruitful career, Dr. Wilson served the congregation of New Union Chapel AME Church with great devotion, affection, and vision; and
WHEREAS, a remarkable man and a compassionate spiritual leader, Dr. Wilson will be sorely missed by his wife, Edith M. “Geraldine” Wilson; his daughter Donna Marie Wilson; his many loving family members, including his mother Alcora E. Wilson, his brother Andrew Wilson, and his granddaughter Kennedy Marie Wilson; his numerous friends and admirers; and the congregation of New Union Chapel AME Church; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a fine Virginian, the Reverend Dr. Clifton R. Wilson; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Reverend Dr. Clifton R. Wilson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
