Celebrating the life of Arnetta Gilmore Washington.

WHEREAS, Arnetta Gilmore Washington, formerly of Hampton, a respected teacher and administrator, died on September 20, 2008; and

WHEREAS, a native of Durham, North Carolina, Arnetta Washington was born to Exter and Ella Gilmore on March 6, 1940; and

WHEREAS, Arnetta Washington attended Hillside High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Winston-Salem State University and a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from North Carolina Central University; she also attended The College of William and Mary and the University of Virginia for certification in elementary and secondary school administration; and

WHEREAS, Arnetta Washington married Raymond Washington, and the couple had a wonderful son, Dr. Raymond G. Washington, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong educator, Arnetta Washington began her career as a teacher at Y. H. Thomas Junior High School in Hampton; and

WHEREAS, her dedication to her students and hard work soon led her to become principal of Syms Middle School, where under her leadership the school received the National Excellence Award for academic achievement; and

WHEREAS, desiring to influence future generations of educators, Arnetta Washington, even after retirement, supervised student teachers from James Madison University; and

WHEREAS, mindful of the needs in her community, Arnetta Washington served as a member of the Sentara Hospital Board, the Hampton Unity Commission, and the Downtown Hampton Child Development Corporation; and

WHEREAS, Arnetta Washington will be fondly remembered for her kind and generous nature and greatly missed by her loving husband, Raymond; her son, Raymond, Jr., and his wife, Toni; her two beloved grandchildren, Jackson and Mia; and numerous friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an exemplary educator and outstanding Virginian, Arnetta Gilmore Washington; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Arnetta Gilmore Washington as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
