SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 282
Celebrating the life of Mary Mildred Carrington.

WHEREAS, Mary Mildred Carrington of Newport News, a beloved citizen and avid community supporter, died on October 4, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Mildred Carrington was the daughter of the late George and Mildred Williams and grew up and attended public schools in Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, Mildred Carrington moved with her family to Williamsburg, where she graduated from Bruton Heights High School and completed cosmetology school; she later received police academy training; and

WHEREAS, Mildred Williams married William E. Carrington, Sr., and the couple settled in Newport News, shared a wonderful life together, and raised four daughters: Lorraine, Antoinette, Pauline, and Petrine and a son, William; and

WHEREAS, a great mentor of young people and an inspiration to her peers, Mildred Carrington retired from the Office of the Dean of Women at Hampton University following many years of outstanding service; and

WHEREAS, a warm and generous woman of tremendous strength, Mildred Carrington enjoyed her life and work in Hampton Roads, was an enthusiastic supporter of her community, and was an exceptional wife, mother, and grandmother and a loyal friend; and

WHEREAS, Mildred Carrington will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her devoted husband and her loving children and their families, including 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and her numerous friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sorrow the passing of a fine Virginian, Mary Mildred Carrington; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Mary Mildred Carrington as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
