HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 60 Offered February 26, 2009 Celebrating the life of Ida M. James. ---------- Patron-- Howell, A.T. ----------

WHEREAS, Ida M. James, a respected citizen and loving wife and mother from Norfolk, died on February 16, 2009; and

WHEREAS, a native of Florida, Ida James was born to loving parents Lafayette McMillan and Charity McMillan-Davis; and

WHEREAS, Ida James attended Stevens High School in Florida and received a bachelor’s degree with honors from Bethune-Cookman College (now University); she was selected Miss Bethune-Cookman College for 1948 - 1949; and

WHEREAS, a devoted wife and mother, Ida James married her husband, Grady James, now a professor emeritus of the mass communications and journalism department at Norfolk State University, and together they raised three wonderful children; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated and valued employee of 28 years, Ida James began working at Norfolk State University as a secretary in the special education department; she spent her last 20 years there as an administrative assistant in the president’s office; and

WHEREAS, Ida James lived her faith through her works and as a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she was actively involved in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Ida James will be fondly remembered for her kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by her loving husband, Dr. Grady James; their children, Michael James, Christopher James, and Dr. Patricia James and their families; and many other relatives and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Ida M. James, a respected citizen of the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ida M. James as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for her memory.
