2009 SESSION
WHEREAS, Mary Austin Campbell Hughes, a respected citizen and community volunteer from Wytheville, died on February 20, 2009; and
WHEREAS, Mary Hughes was born to loving parents Mary Austin Campbell and Fitzgerald Campbell and grew up in Wytheville; and
WHEREAS, Mary Hughes graduated from Wytheville High School and the National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C., and attended Hollins College (now University); and
WHEREAS, a devoted wife and mother, Mary Hughes married the love of her life, the late Dr. Charles Brock Hughes, and together they raised five wonderful children; and
WHEREAS, Mary Hughes gave generously of her time and talents as a member of the Stuart Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; the Junior League of Augusta, Georgia; and the Rotary Club, where she was named a Paul Harris Fellow in honor of her lifetime of unselfish service and concern for individuals in her community; and
WHEREAS, Mary Hughes lived her faith through her actions and as a 60-year member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she was actively involved in the church’s many missions in the community; and
WHEREAS, Mary Hughes served as a trustee for the church and was one of the first women to serve on the vestry; she also was a leader of the Episcopal Church Women; and
WHEREAS, Mary Hughes will be fondly remembered for her gracious spirit and loving concern for others and will be greatly missed by her children, Mary, Lee, Charles, Fitzgerald, and Suzanne and their families; her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Mary Austin Campbell Hughes, a respected citizen and a fine Virginian; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Mary Austin Campbell Hughes as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for her memory.
