Commending the USO of Hampton Roads on the occasion of its 25th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the USO of Hampton Roads celebrates 25 years of outstanding service to the brave military men and women and their families in the Hampton Roads area; and

WHEREAS, the United Service Organizations (USO) was founded in 1941 at the request of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to handle on-leave recreation of the United States Armed Forces; and

WHEREAS, six civilian agencies, the Salvation Army, Young Men’s Christian Association, Young Women’s Christian Association, National Catholic Community Services, National Travelers Aid Association, and the National Jewish Welfare Board coordinated their efforts to provide services; and

WHEREAS, the USO of Hampton Roads, the largest affiliate location in the United States, was organized in 1984 and set up its first office in the Coliseum Mall in Hampton; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the USO of Hampton Roads is to enhance the quality of life and public support of the valiant military members and their families through information and referral, quality of life, and family outreach programs; and

WHEREAS, the USO of Hampton Roads has grown from providing coffee and doughnuts at homecomings and deployments to offering over 100 programs at nine affiliate locations to over 350,000 military members and their families every year; and

WHEREAS, the USO of Hampton Roads sponsors popular annual events like the Patriotic Festival, Military Appreciation Day at the Virginia Zoo, Operation Holiday Spirit, and the USO Gala; and

WHEREAS, the USO of Hampton Roads, a nongovernmental organization, receives generous support from individuals and the local business community that enables the organization to provide the best possible services to the dedicated military personnel and their families in the Hampton Roads area; and

WHEREAS, the USO of Hampton Roads has proudly served and supported the hard-working military personnel and their families for the past 25 years and looks forward to meeting their needs in the future; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the USO of Hampton Roads hereby be commended on the occasion of its 25th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the USO of Hampton Roads as an expression of the House of Delegates’ best wishes for a joyful 25th anniversary and future success in serving the military members and their families of the Hampton Roads community.
