099197432WHEREAS, Nathaniel B. Early, Jr., a prominent figure in Virginia public service, served as a member of the House of Delegates and Virginia Senate for 36 years and as collector of internal revenue for Virginia for 14 years; and
WHEREAS, a native of Wakefield in scenic Albemarle County, Nathaniel Early was born on July 30, 1866, and attended Fishburne Military School before receiving a bachelor’s degree from the Virginia Military Institute and a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law; and
WHEREAS, Nathaniel Early represented Greene and Madison Counties in the House of Delegates from 1897 to 1906 and served the 26th Senatorial District for a total of 26 years, where he worked to enact important legislation for his constituents; and
WHEREAS, committed to public service, Nathaniel Early also ran several campaigns for a seat in the United States House of Representatives; and
WHEREAS, Nathaniel Early diligently served as the United States Collector of Internal Revenue for Virginia for 14 years; in 1945 he saw revenues in Virginia soar from $90,000,000 to $830,000,000; and
WHEREAS, in his private life, Nathaniel Early was a farmer and enjoyed spending time with his family, wife Sudie Brent Brown, and their four children; and
WHEREAS, Nathaniel Early was actively involved in his community as a member of many organizations, including the Methodist Church, Odd Fellows, and Jamestown Exposition Commission in 1907; and
WHEREAS, Nathaniel Early passed away on August 15, 1947, after having served Virginia for many decades; he left behind a legacy of service to his community and the Commonwealth that serves as a model for others desiring to join public service; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commemorate the decades of service to the Commonwealth of Nathaniel B. Early, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Nathaniel B. Early, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
