HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 984
Commending Trooper Kurt J. Johnson.

WHEREAS, Trooper Kurt J. Johnson of the Area 31 State Police office, which serves the Eastern Shore of Virginia, is commended for extraordinary heroism; and

WHEREAS, on February 6, 2009, Trooper Kurt J. Johnson came upon an overturned car that was on fire; and

WHEREAS, a frightened woman and her two children were outside the car, but the mother informed Trooper Kurt J. Johnson that a third child was still inside the car; and

WHEREAS, Trooper Kurt J. Johnson desperately tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher and when that was unsuccessful, he bravely crawled through the rear passenger door into the smoke-filled car; and

WHEREAS, Trooper Kurt J. Johnson was able to locate the three-year-old under the dashboard and pull her to safety; and

WHEREAS, the small child had suffered two broken legs and would have been unable to extricate herself from the car; she is now recovering well; and

WHEREAS, after being in the smoke-filled car, Trooper Kurt J. Johnson had to be treated for smoke inhalation, but was later released; and

WHEREAS, Trooper Kurt J. Johnson’s courageous actions saved the life of the small child and exemplify the unfailing devotion to duty and selfless concern for others that police officers and other first responders throughout the Commonwealth and the nation possess; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Trooper Kurt J. Johnson for his extraordinary heroism in rescuing a child from a burning car; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Trooper Kurt J. Johnson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his actions and public service to the Commonwealth.
