HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 954
Commending the Honorable A. Lee McGratty.

WHEREAS, the Honorable A. Lee McGratty served with great distinction as a General District Court Judge for the 25th Judicial District, which includes the City of Staunton and Augusta County, from May 31, 1996, until his retirement on December 31, 2008; and

WHEREAS, a native of Brooklyn, New York, A. Lee McGratty received a bachelor’s degree from Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts, before proudly serving as an officer in the United States Navy; and

WHEREAS, A. Lee McGratty received a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law and had a general law practice in Charlottesville from 1967 to 1968 before moving to Waynesboro; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated attorney, A. Lee McGratty practiced general law in Waynesboro for almost 30 years and worked diligently on behalf of the clients he served; and

WHEREAS, before his appointment, A. Lee McGratty served as an able and fair substitute judge in General District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations courts from Rockbridge County to Nelson County as well as Commissioner in Chancery for Waynesboro, Augusta County, and Nelson County; and

WHEREAS, as a General District Court Judge, Judge McGratty heard cases from traffic offenses to capital murders and was known for his thoughtfulness, fairness, and effective and efficient administration of justice; and

WHEREAS, mindful of the needs in the community, A. Lee McGratty has given generously of his time and talents over the years to many community organizations, including the Staunton Civic Dance Company, Shenandoah Valley Art Center, and First Night Waynesboro; and

WHEREAS, A. Lee McGratty, whose hobby is designing stage sets, has served as a board member of the Waynesboro Players, president of the Waynesboro Lions Club, and chairman of the Waynesboro Planning Commission; and

WHEREAS, throughout his time on the bench, Judge A. Lee McGratty served the citizens of the City of Staunton and Augusta County with fairness, common sense, and commitment to equal justice for all; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Honorable A. Lee McGratty for his dedication to Virginia’s judicial system, his profession, and the citizens of the City of Staunton, Augusta County, and the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Honorable A. Lee McGratty as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his wisdom and fairness in administering justice in Virginia and best wishes for a joyful retirement.
