HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 949
Commending Broad Run High School on the occasion of its 40th anniversary.

WHEREAS, in 2009 Broad Run High School of the Loudoun County Public Schools celebrates its 40th anniversary of providing quality education to the young people of Loudoun County; and

WHEREAS, Broad Run High School opened its doors in 1969 with a dedication by Governor Mills E. Godwin, Jr., and the school’s first students graduated as the Class of 1970; and

WHEREAS, originally a rural school, Broad Run High School has experienced explosive physical and demographic growth and a significant increase in diversity over the years; and

WHEREAS, Broad Run High School is located in one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States, and the high school has one of the most culturally diverse student populations in the region; and

WHEREAS, Broad Run High School’s principal, Dr. Edgar T. Markley, helps students develop a strong sense of character and a commitment to the school’s mission statement: “accepting responsibility and respecting others and ourselves”; and

WHEREAS, Broad Run High School is dedicated to school improvement through teacher involvement and empowerment, and teachers work in groups to enhance instructional initiatives, such as technology, assistance to students in transition, an at-risk students program, school-business partnerships, career education, minority achievement, and Standards of Learning (SOL) testing; and

WHEREAS, Broad Run High School’s outstanding administrators, teachers, and staff work diligently to achieve a high attendance rate, success on the SOL tests, strong SAT scores, and a positive school environment; and

WHEREAS, Broad Run High School is a vibrant high school that continues to provide an outstanding academic experience and numerous excellent learning opportunities for its students; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Broad Run High School on the occasion of its 40th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Broad Run High School as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude to the school for its commitment to the young people of Loudoun County and best wishes for continued success in the future.
