HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 942
Commending Lynnhaven River NOW.

WHEREAS, Lynnhaven River NOW is the recipient of the prestigious 2009 Gold Award in the Environmental Program category of the Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards; and

WHEREAS, Lynnhaven River NOW was founded in 2003 by Andrew Fine and Harry Lester, because they were concerned about the decline of the Lynnhaven River watershed, which includes Long Creek, Broad Bay, Crystal Lake, Linkhorn Bay, and their tributaries; and

WHEREAS, Lynnhaven River NOW is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the well-being and restoration of the Lynnhaven River, which has become an important initiative of the City of Virginia Beach, its residents, and the city council; and

WHEREAS, the mission of Lynnhaven River NOW and its many volunteers and supporters is to seed the Lynnhaven River with water-filtering oysters; promote a greater public awareness of the river’s problems; increase programs and resources to enable homeowners to better protect the river from runoff; foster partnerships to reduce river pollution; and engage local, state, and federal government in efforts to restore the river; and

WHEREAS, Lynnhaven River NOW will be presented with the Gold Award at the 2009 Environment Virginia Symposium Awards Banquet on April 1, 2009; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Lynnhaven River NOW as the winner of the 2009 Gold Award in the Environmental Program category of the Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lynnhaven River NOW for its dedication to the Lynnhaven River and its outstanding service to Virginia Beach.
