Commending Canon Virginia, Inc.

WHEREAS, Canon Virginia, Inc., an admired corporate citizen of Virginia, is commended for its philosophy of responsibility and commitment to the youth and workforce of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Canon’s corporate philosophy is “kyosei,” which means “all people, regardless of race, religion, or culture, harmoniously living and working together into the future”; and

WHEREAS, this philosophy leads to Canon’s tradition of protecting and preserving the most precious resources: the world it shares, the communities it serves, and the lives it touches; and

WHEREAS, Canon has proudly partnered with various organizations to promote environmental awareness and education; Canon established the first and longest-running cartridge return program in 1990 and received ISO 14001 certification, which is an internationally accepted specification for environmental management systems; and

WHEREAS, for 24 years, Canon Virginia has been a valued and responsible corporate citizen of the Commonwealth of Virginia, employing nearly 1,500 people in the Hampton Roads area; and

WHEREAS, in May 2008, Canon Virginia launched, as part of its “Vision for the Future,” a $600 million expansion in the Hampton Roads area, which will create 1,000 new Virginia jobs; and

WHEREAS, this expansion will create a new 700,000-square-foot facility for the manufacturing of cartridges for laser printers and a center for the research and development of automated and robotic manufacturing technologies; in addition, Canon Virginia will expand its efforts at recycling and reclaiming of toner cartridges at the Industrial Resource Technologies, Inc., operation in Gloucester County; and

WHEREAS, committed to the local community, Canon Virginia will partner with local workforce development resources, including the Virginia Community College System, local schools, and the Virginia Department of Business Assistance, to create a Technical Training Academy to equip its workforce with the necessary skills for new jobs; and

WHEREAS, as part of its corporate philosophy of preserving the most precious resources, Canon Virginia has established the Canon Leadership Scholars Program at Christopher Newport University (CNU); 25 students in CNU’s President’s Leadership Program will receive a $5,000 merit scholarship each year; and

WHEREAS, this program will not only provide a merit scholarship, but leadership studies, guest speakers, study abroad opportunities, an outdoor leadership program, internships, and a public service requirement; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Canon Virginia for its commitment to Virginia’s natural resources, the Hampton Roads community, and the youth and workforce of Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Canon Virginia as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for its contributions to Virginia and its commitment to “kyosei.”
