Commending the Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps on the occasion of its 10th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps (RAM) is celebrating its 10th year of bringing free vision, dental, and medical services to the citizens of Wise County and the surrounding area, as well as to surrounding states; and

WHEREAS, RAM is a nonprofit, volunteer, airborne relief corps dedicated to serving humankind by providing free health care, dental care, eye care, veterinary services, and technical and educational assistance to people in remote areas of the United States and the world; and

WHEREAS, Remote Area Medical Expeditions are highly mobile, remarkably efficient relief efforts that are manned by committed and hardworking volunteer doctors, nurses, technicians, and veterinarians who travel all over the world at their own expense and treat hundreds of patients a day; and

WHEREAS, since 2000, many outstanding providers have worked in tandem to support RAM activities in Wise County, including The Health Wagon, a RAM Wise expedition cosponsor; Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity of Virginia; Virginia Dental Association; University of Virginia Health System’s School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and School of Pharmacy; Wise County Department of Health; and the Virginia Lions and a host of other generous agencies, organizations, and individuals; and

WHEREAS, since 2000, the Wise County Remote Area Medical Expedition and its dedicated volunteers have brought free vision, dental, and medical services worth more than $8.5 million to an estimated 16,000 people; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps on 10 years of exemplary service to the citizens of Wise County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude to the organization for its commitment to providing quality health services to people in need in the Commonwealth and other areas around the world.
