HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 924
Celebrating the life of George S. Hughes.

WHEREAS, George S. Hughes, a respected citizen and longtime Norfolk resident and dedicated community leader, died on February 5, 2009; and

WHEREAS, George Hughes was born and raised in Norfolk and at an early age displayed his athletic abilities; and

WHEREAS, George Hughes was an honored and decorated veteran of World War II, serving his country by flying 23 missions as a member of the United States Air Force in the Pacific Theater; and

WHEREAS, George Hughes was a dedicated scholar, earning both bachelor's and master's degrees in education from The College of William and Mary; and

WHEREAS, while at The College of William and Mary, George Hughes was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, the national honorary fraternity for excellence in academics, athletics, and leadership; and

WHEREAS, George Hughes played football at The College of William and Mary and was recognized as an All-American for his achievements on the field and was elected to the William and Mary Sports Hall of Fame, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, and the College Football Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, George Hughes played in the National Football League for the Pittsburgh Steelers and was named to multiple Pro Bowls and earned a spot on the All-Time Steelers team; and

WHEREAS, after the conclusion of his professional football career, George Hughes dedicated himself to serving his community as a councilman for the City of Norfolk and as a member of both the Norfolk School Board and the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, as well as being active in the Khedive Temple, Lions Club of Ocean View, and VFW Post 3160; and

WHEREAS, George Hughes was the successful owner and proprietor of an Ocean View landmark for many years, Hughes Hardware; and

WHEREAS, George Hughes will be fondly remembered not only for his athletic prowess but also for his sense of civic duty and patriotism and will be greatly missed by his devoted wife, Kate; his children, daughters Kathy Gillette and Susan Anderson and son Dr. George S. Hughes, Jr., M.D.; his seven grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a fine athlete, community leader, and outstanding Virginian, George S. Hughes; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of George S. Hughes as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
