HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 919
Commending the Herndon Chamber of Commerce on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

WHEREAS, in 2009 the Herndon Chamber of Commerce celebrates 50 years of outstanding service to the vibrant and expanding business community of Northern Virginia; and

WHEREAS, founded and formally incorporated on January 20, 1959, the Herndon Chamber of Commerce grew to include the Dulles Area Chamber of Commerce in 2000; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Chamber of Commerce became a part of the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2007 and has grown into the largest Chamber of Commerce in Fairfax County with more than 1,000 member businesses; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Chamber of Commerce’s mission is to promote and facilitate the success of businesses and the communities they serve through networking, workforce development, outreach, and advocacy; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Chamber of Commerce serves businesses in western Fairfax and eastern Loudoun Counties, including the Town of Herndon, the area around Dulles Airport, Sterling, Chantilly, Centreville, and South Riding; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Chamber of Commerce serves one of the nation’s foremost high-tech corridors and acts as a resource, public affairs advocate, and community partner for more than 1,000 businesses and affiliates; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Chamber of Commerce was the first mainstream Virginia chamber to have a Hispanic Business Council, which invites Latino business owners to bring their talents into the Chamber and to help their businesses grow; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Chamber of Commerce’s Education Council collaborates and develops meaningful programs that support educational and career-related experiences for students in the member schools in an effort to help students make a connection between school and the real world and to prepare them to meet the challenges of the workforces of the 21st century; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Chamber of Commerce was the first area chamber to have an Asian Business Committee to encourage and facilitate business with and for the Asian community locally, nationally, and internationally through the four initiatives of education, marketing, cultural awareness, and networking; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Chamber of Commerce has created its Green Business Initiative to help identify actions that may be taken within the workplace that will promote a more environmentally responsible community; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Chamber of Commerce’s Wellness Initiative showcases resources to encourage proactive wellness initiatives in the workplace; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Chamber of Commerce’s Economic Development Initiative works diligently to enhance the brand of the Dulles region; monitors the awareness and analysis of issues impacting economic development; makes recommendations to the Chamber’s Board regarding positions they need to take; maintains relationships with organizations that impact economic development; and serves as a knowledge base for issues affecting the region and disseminates them on the Web; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Chamber of Commerce has garnered numerous awards and recognitions, including Fairfax County Public Schools’ Partner of the Year award; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Herndon Chamber of Commerce on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Herndon Chamber of Commerce as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude to the organization for its longtime service and dedication to the businesses of Northern Virginia.
