Celebrating the life of Lieutenant General, USA Ret., William Henry Sterling Wright.

WHEREAS, Lieutenant General William Henry Sterling Wright, United States Army, Retired, an outstanding officer and respected citizen of Irvington, died on January 14, 2009; and

WHEREAS, born October 29, 1907, William Wright attended the United States Military Academy (West Point), and married the late Matilda Basinger Wright; and

WHEREAS, proud to serve his country, William Wright was assigned to the 7th U.S. Cavalry at Fort Bliss, Texas, where he was a United States Army Horse Cavalryman; and

WHEREAS, during a 35-year career with the military, General Wright landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day, was the acting chief of the Korean Military Assistance Group when North Korea launched its invasion of South Korea, held senior positions in the Pentagon, commanded the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood, Texas, and retired as Chief of the Office of Reserve Components; and

WHEREAS, an accomplished horseman, General Wright was a member of the United States Olympic Equestrian Team in the 1930s, and won the International Military Equestrian Championship at the 1946 National Horse Show in Madison Square Garden; and

WHEREAS, William Wright remained active during retirement, serving as commodore of the local yacht club, helping build the new community library, mentoring students at Lancaster County Public Schools, and serving in various roles at Grace Episcopal Church; and

WHEREAS, William Wright will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Gibson Dey Eppler Wright; his three sons, William Wright, Samuel Wright, and Lt. Col. Walter Wright and their families; and many friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine officer and outstanding Virginian, Lieutenant General, USA Ret., William Henry Sterling Wright; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lieutenant General, USA Ret., William Henry Sterling Wright as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
