099011664WHEREAS, Richard Bryant Anthony, Sr., of Richmond, a beloved educator and community volunteer, died on January 24, 2009; and
WHEREAS, a native of North Carolina, Richard Anthony grew up in Wilson, North Carolina, proudly served in the United States Coast Guard, and received a bachelor’s degree in industrial arts from East Carolina College, now East Carolina University; and
WHEREAS, after graduation, Richard Anthony received 26 job offers and chose to come to Henrico County as an industrial arts teacher at Douglas S. Freeman High School; and
WHEREAS, a dedicated and beloved educator, Richard Anthony, known for his “board of education” in his shop classes, taught industrial arts at Douglas Freeman High School from 1958 to 1973 and served as principal from 1973 to 1986; and
WHEREAS, Richard Anthony, “gray and blue through and through,” loved his work and considered the students, faculty, and staff of Douglas Freeman High School as extended family and spent countless hours at after-school activities and events in addition to serving as a volunteer firefighter with Henrico County Station 8; and
WHEREAS, in 1986 Richard Anthony was transferred from Douglas Freeman High School to serve as the administrator of a new vocational-educational foundation for Henrico County despite the opposition of several hundred students from Douglas Freeman High School who did not want to see him leave their school; and
WHEREAS, Richard Anthony worked for two years with vocational-education students who designed and built houses to sell, the first program of its kind in the Richmond area; with his industrial arts and administrative background, he was instrumental in finding land and orchestrating the details of the program; and
WHEREAS, an accomplished woodworker, Richard Anthony enjoyed working on different projects and built several additions to his own home; he also enjoyed traveling with his wife to World War II battlefields; and
WHEREAS, Richard Anthony will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 53 years, Jane; their children Dick, Fred, and David and their families; and many friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine educator and outstanding Virginian, Richard Bryant Anthony, Sr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Richard Bryant Anthony, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
