HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 893
Honoring Her Majesty's Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald, KCMG, and welcoming him to Virginia's Capitol and the General Assembly of Virginia.

WHEREAS, the members of the House of Delegates and the Senate of Virginia are honored to recognize Sir Nigel Sheinwald, KCMG, the 49th British Ambassador to the United States, and warmly welcome him to Virginia’s Capitol and the General Assembly of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Virginia have shared a long history and a common heritage, and Virginia was named in honor of Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1584; and

WHEREAS, the Colony of Virginia was nicknamed “The Old Dominion” by King Charles II in the mid-17th century, and the Commonwealth of Virginia has retained the name as its official nickname; and

WHEREAS, the first permanent English settlement in the New World was founded in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607, and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II honored the Commonwealth of Virginia with her visit to the Capitol and Historic Jamestown in May 2007 in commemoration of the 400th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Virginia have a history of educational partnerships, from the royal charter of The College of William and Mary in 1693 to the many university scholarships and student exchange programs that exist today between Virginia and the United Kingdom; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United Kingdom have long been trade partners, and the United Kingdom is now Virginia’s fifth largest export destination; and

WHEREAS, the militaries of the United States and the United Kingdom have maintained extensive cooperation, including the stationing of British personnel on Virginia bases; and

WHEREAS, the governments of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United Kingdom will continue to share best practice policies for the mutual benefit of their people; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly celebrate the long-standing, positive relationship of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United Kingdom on the occasion of the visit of Her Majesty’s Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald, KCMG, on February 13, 2009; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sir Nigel Sheinwald, KCMG, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and warm welcome to Virginia’s Capitol and the General Assembly of Virginia.
