HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 886
Celebrating the life of Louis J. Hausrath.

WHEREAS, Louis J. Hausrath of Waynesboro, former mayor of Waynesboro and community volunteer, died on November 29, 2008; and

WHEREAS, a native of Ohio, Louis Hausrath proudly served his country during World War II as a B-17 navigator with the Eighth Air Force stationed in Debach, England, where he once guided a squadron to safety using only a slide ruler, star chart, and the stars; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Louis Hausrath married the love of his life, Betty, with whom he enjoyed a 63-year marriage; they raised a wonderful family of five children; and

WHEREAS, Louis Hausrath received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Florida and came to Waynesboro, Virginia, as an engineer and planner for the DuPont Company, where he worked for 34 years; and

WHEREAS, Louis Hausrath had a calm and cool approach to challenges that served him well as he served on the Waynesboro City Council from 1970 to 1978, four of those years as mayor; he then served as chairman of the Waynesboro School Board and Central Shenandoah Planning Commission; and

WHEREAS, Louis Hausrath played a key role in the credit union movement; he was a board member of the Waynesboro DuPont Credit Union, the Central Virginia Chapter of the Virginia Credit Union League, the Association of DuPont Credit Unions, and the Virginia and National Credit Unions; he also served as president of the Waynesboro DuPont Credit Union and the Central Virginia Chapter of the Virginia Credit Union League; and

WHEREAS, an accomplished musician, Louis Hausrath founded the Waynesboro Municipal Band, served as president and board member of the Waynesboro Community Concerts Association, and served on the board and played in the Waynesboro Symphonic Orchestra; he also served as a vocal soloist at his church for 35 years; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to his community, Louis Hausrath served on the board of the Valley Program for Aging Services, volunteered at the YMCA and Senior Center of Waynesboro, served as a packmaster for the Boy Scouts, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Waynesboro; and

WHEREAS, a graceful and humble man, Louis Hausrath was a faithful member of First Church of Christ, Scientist and was active in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Louis Hausrath will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Betty; their surviving children and their families; and many friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a dedicated public servant and outstanding Virginian, Louis J. Hausrath; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Louis J. Hausrath as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
