096750500WHEREAS, Ethel Mary Beun, a distinguished resident of Alexandria and a lifelong philanthropist and entrepreneur, died on December 1, 2008; and
WHEREAS, born in Singac, New Jersey, Ethel Beun was the eldest daughter of Stefan and Mary Dancho; in 1959 she earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Arizona; and
WHEREAS, Ethel Beun founded a nursery and day school in Peru, where she taught reading and writing to 50 children; she taught in the District of Columbia prior to opening a gift shop, Unique, in Old Town Alexandria in 1969; and
WHEREAS, known for her compassion for people and animals, Ethel Beun founded a homeless cat shelter known as King Street Cats that rescues about 250 cats each year; and she donated the second floor of her business building for the organization’s mission; and
WHEREAS, Ethel Beun was an active member of Arlington Metaphysical Chapel and enjoyed yoga and other exercise activities; and
WHEREAS, a loving and lively woman, Ethel Beun will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her devoted husband, Jim Logan; her daughter, Jennifer Rohrbach; her son, Brian Beun, Jr.; her two stepsons, Jim Logan, Jr., and David Logan; her seven grandchildren; and many other loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a fine Virginian, Ethel Mary Beun; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ethel Mary Beun as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
