Celebrating the life of William B. Hurd.

WHEREAS, William B. "Bill" Hurd, an honorable and renowned resident of Alexandria, died on October 25, 2008; and

WHEREAS, born on August 27, 1915, in Lynn, Massachusetts, Bill Hurd received his undergraduate degree from the University of New Hampshire in political science, which led to his interest in public service and transportation issues; and

WHEREAS, as a lifelong civil servant, Bill Hurd worked for the Army Corps of Engineers, the Interior Department, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the United States Housing and Home Finance Agency, and the Office of Transportation; during World War II, he served as an officer with the Army Corps of Engineers; and

WHEREAS, known as an expert in mass transportation, Bill Hurd was instrumental in designing Alexandria’s DASH transit system in 1984, served as the chairman of the DASH transit system board for 23 years, and also served on the Alexandria Transportation Planning Board, the Alexandria Planning Commission, and the Northern Virginia Regional Planning Commission; and

WHEREAS, a valued consultant and citizen, Bill Hurd’s knowledge and experience were utilized throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States; and

WHEREAS, Bill Hurd served for five years on the Alexandria School Board, was inducted into the American Public Transportation Hall of Fame in 1988, and was named one of Alexandria’s 12 "Living Legends" in 2007; and

WHEREAS, a respected citizen, Bill Hurd will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his son, William, from his wife, Mariette, who died in 1978; and many other loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an outstanding Virginian, William B. Hurd; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William B. Hurd as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
