HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 839 Offered January 30, 2009 Commending the Franklin High School football team. ----------

WHEREAS, the Franklin High School football team capped an 8 - 2 season by winning the Virginia High School League Group A, Division I state football championship on December 6, 2008; and

WHEREAS, on their way to the state title, the Franklin Broncos avenged previous losses by defeating Sussex Central High School in the Region A semifinals and Colonial Beach High School in the Region A finals before moving on to the state tournament, where they defeated William Campbell High School in the semifinals; and

WHEREAS, in the state tournament held at Salem City Stadium, Franklin High School defeated Clintwood High School 28 - 20 in a come-from-behind win to take the state championship for the second time in four years; and

WHEREAS, talented and determined, the Franklin High School football players worked hard throughout the season to achieve the state championship win; they also demonstrated their commitment to academic excellence by maintaining commendable grade point averages throughout the season; and

WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the Franklin High School Broncos is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Darren Parker and his staff; and the support of the students, faculty, and administration of Franklin High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Franklin Broncos on their outstanding 2008 season and Virginia High School League Group A, Division I state football championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Darren Parker as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the championship performance of the Franklin High School football team.
