WHEREAS, Carol B. Motley, the outstanding director of the Pittsylvania Economic Development Organization, retired on January 1, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Carol Motley began her career as the Registrar of Hargrave Military Academy, where she managed student records and assisted in the preparation of annual budgets; and

WHEREAS, creative and industrious, Carol Motley came to the Pittsylvania County Economic Development office in 1989 as a research and marketing coordinator; and

WHEREAS, recognized for her hard work and leadership, Carol Motley became executive director of the Pittsylvania Economic Development Organization in 1999; and

WHEREAS, Carol Motley has worked diligently to manage the day-to-day operations of the office; to represent Pittsylvania County at trade shows and seminars; and to market county industrial sites and buildings; and

WHEREAS, in tough economic times, Carol Motley has been a staunch advocate for Pittsylvania County, focusing on retaining existing employers and jobs as well as recruiting new companies, such as the eToys Distribution Center and the IKEA subsidiary, Swedwood; and

WHEREAS, mindful of the needs of the community, Carol Motley has served on many community boards, including the Dan River Business Development Center and Danville-Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce; she has been a member of the Virginia Economic Development Association, Southern Economic Development Council, and the American Chamber of Commerce Researchers Association; and

WHEREAS, an active Rotarian, Carol Motley was the past president of Chatham Rotary and a Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Carol B. Motley, an outstanding Virginian, on her longtime and excellent service to Pittsylvania County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Carol B. Motley as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her commitment to Pittsylvania County and best wishes for her retirement.
