Commending William D. Henderson, Jr.

WHEREAS, William D. Henderson, Jr., of Reedville, a superb emergency medical technician and leader in the emergency medical service community, is recognized for his longtime service to his fellow citizens of the Commonwealth; and

 WHEREAS, William D. “Bill” Henderson, Jr., has been a valuable member of the Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad (CARS) from 1963 to 1995 and the Northumberland County Rescue Squad (NCRS) from 1995 to the present; and

WHEREAS, Bill Henderson has served his fellow residents for a total of 45 years with over 24,000 volunteer hours of service as an outstanding emergency medical technician (EMT) and an advanced life support (ALS) provider, and has served as mentor and trainer to a great number of exemplary EMTs in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, since 1995, Bill Henderson has responded to over 1,150 emergency calls on behalf of the NCRS and trained approximately 200 EMTs who serve the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, ensuring sufficient and qualified volunteer manpower; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to providing the best emergency medical services possible, Bill Henderson has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including the President's Volunteer Service Award, his second, and the Point of Light Award by the NCRS in 2008; the President's Volunteer Service Award for Lifetime Achievement by CARS in 2008; the Governor's Award for Outstanding Pre-Hospital Provider in 2003; the Outstanding Pre-Hospital Provider by the Peninsula EMS Council in 2001; the EMT of the Year by Rappahannock General Hospital in 2000; the Joel Cochran Award for Outstanding Service by CARS in 1995; the Captain's Choice Award by CARS in 1986; and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Citation of Merit in 1973; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of Bill Henderson's wealth of knowledge and his many contributions to emergency services in the City of Charlottesville, William D. Henderson Day was proclaimed by the mayor of Charlottesville in 1993; and

 WHEREAS, highly respected by his peers and citizens alike, Bill Henderson is the oldest practicing EMT-B instructor in Virginia, the second-oldest ALS provider in Virginia, and the 14th-oldest emergency medical services (EMS) provider in the state; and

WHEREAS, the importance and value of Bill Henderson's outstanding service and expertise is widely recognized and appreciated by the EMS community; and

WHEREAS, on December 21, 2008, Bill Henderson received the Northumberland County Rescue Squad's award for his lifetime of service at a ceremony in his honor at the Creek Country Club in Kilmarnock; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate William D. Henderson, Jr., of Reedville, for his longtime service to his community and fellow citizens of the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to William D. Henderson, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of his many achievements and dedication to quality emergency medical services in Virginia.
