Commending the Virginia Scenic Rivers Program.

WHEREAS, the Virginia Scenic Rivers Program was established in 1970 and will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2010; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Scenic Rivers Program designates and helps protect rivers and streams that possess outstanding scenic, recreational, historic, and natural characteristics that are of statewide significance; and

WHEREAS, scenic river designations result from initiatives from partnerships of local organizations, local governments, state agencies, and the General Assembly of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, since the advent of the program, 24 river segments totaling more than 500 river miles have been designated as state scenic rivers; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) administers the Virginia Scenic Rivers Program, is assisted and advised by the State Scenic River Advisory Board, and receives guidance from locally appointed advisory committees; and

WHEREAS, rivers possessing outstanding scenic qualities continue to be evaluated and added to the system; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby recognize the Virginia Scenic Rivers Program in advance of the occasion of its 40th anniversary so that the State Scenic River Advisory Board, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, and interested citizens and local governments may plan for appropriate celebrations in 2010; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia Scenic Rivers Program as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude for the efforts of those state and local entities and individuals who have moved this program forward for the benefit of all Virginians now and in the future.
