098769780WHEREAS, as Henry Adams observed, "The teacher affects eternity. He [or she] can never tell where his [or her] influence stops"; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Education convenes a commission that recommends candidates for recognition by trustees of The Milken Foundation, which annually awards $25,000 to 80 outstanding classroom teachers from across the country; and
WHEREAS, Laura Marshall, a third-grade teacher at Grange Hall Elementary School located in Moseley in Chesterfield County, has been selected as a Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award recipient for 2008; and
WHEREAS, Laura Marshall uses many unique stratagems to induce a love of learning in her students; and
WHEREAS, Laura Marshall practices project-based learning for small groups of students and takes advantage of appropriate technologies to enrich the learning experience, including her creative "Living History" activities; and
WHEREAS, Laura Marshall’s students regularly excel on tests based on the Commonwealth's Standards of Learning (SOL); 100 percent of her students scored "Advanced" in Social Studies and more than a quarter of her students achieved a perfect score on all SOL examinations; and
WHEREAS, Laura Marshall is a Social Studies Lead Teacher, serves as a mentor and colleague to new teachers in Chesterfield County, is a member of Grange Hall School's Strategic Management Team and Curriculum Academy, and serves as the school's public relations liaison; and
WHEREAS, Laura Marshall attended and graduated from the public schools of Reston and earned both bachelor of science and master of education degrees, the latter cum laude, in Early Childhood Education, from Virginia Tech; and
WHEREAS, Laura Marshall is a devoted wife to husband Adam and mother to two young children, Ryan and Katelyn; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Laura Marshall of Moseley, Virginia, on her contributions to Chesterfield County Schools and on her well-deserved recognition as a Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award recipient; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Laura Marshall as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for her outstanding contributions as a classroom teacher.
