HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 793
Designating March, in 2009 and in each succeeding year, as Deep Vein Thrombosis Awareness Month in Virginia.

WHEREAS, deep vein thrombosis, also known as DVT, occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the large veins, usually in the lower limbs, which leads to partially or completely blocked circulation and may result in a fatal pulmonary embolism; and

WHEREAS, deep vein thrombosis is a serious but preventable medical condition that affects approximately two million Americans every year and pulmonary embolism claims up to 300,000 American lives each year, the majority of which result from DVT; and

WHEREAS, pulmonary embolism causes more deaths each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined and is the leading cause of maternal death associated with childbirth; and fatal pulmonary embolism may be the most preventable cause of hospital death in the United States; and

WHEREAS, some of the risk factors for deep vein thrombosis include cancer and certain heart or respiratory diseases; and the condition can also be triggered by hospitalization, pregnancy, obesity, or restricted mobility caused by long-distance travel; and

WHEREAS, according to a survey conducted by the American Public Health Association, 74 percent of Americans are unaware of DVT as an important health issue; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly designate March, in 2009 and in each succeeding year, as Deep Vein Thrombosis Awareness Month in Virginia to raise public awareness of the threat and causes of deep vein thrombosis; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates post the designation of this month on the General Assembly's website.
