2009 SESSION
WHEREAS, the number of elderly and disabled Americans is dramatically increasing making it crucial to have resources and facilities available that will protect their quality of life while providing assistance with their daily needs; and
WHEREAS, assisted living provides relatively independent seniors with assistance and limited health care services in a home-like atmosphere including 24-hour protective oversight, food, shelter, and a range of services that promote the quality of life of the individual; and
WHEREAS, there are currently 569 licensed assisted living communities in Virginia serving approximately 31,000 seniors and what was once a relatively new concept twenty-five years ago, today assisted living is the most preferred and fastest growing long-term care option for seniors; and
WHEREAS, assisted living facilities and their staff help to promote continued activity and wellness care to not only the residents, but also to the families and communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, assisted living is a long term care service that fosters freedom of choice, independence, and the opportunity to live as before, aging with dignity, privacy and respect; and
WHEREAS, aging and disabilities create physical, emotional, and financial challenges for residents, and assisted living providers understand these issues and offer resources and environments that serve seniors and the disabled; and
WHEREAS, a day dedicated to programs and activities associated with the Assisted Living community will greatly raise awareness and help educate Virginia's citizens as to the services available to patients and their families in the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly designate September 15, in 2009 and in each succeeding year, as Virginia Assisted Living Awareness Day in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates post the designation of this day on the General Assembly's website.
