HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 785
Commending Cadet Gregory E. Lippiatt.

WHEREAS, Gregory (Greg) E. Lippiatt of Lexington, a 1st Class Cadet at the Virginia Military Institute, was one of 32 American men and women selected to receive a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship; and

WHEREAS, the oldest international fellowship, the Rhodes Scholarship was created in 1902 and provides university and travel fees for approximately 80 students from around the world to study at the University of Oxford in England for two to three years; and

WHEREAS, the son of David K. and Christine Lippiatt, Greg Lippiatt is a graduate of York Suburban Senior High School in York, Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, a hard-working and dedicated student, Greg Lippiatt has a double major in history and English, with a concentration in military history; and

WHEREAS, graduating in the spring of 2009 from the Virginia Military Institute, Greg Lippiatt will be commissioned into the United States Army as a second lieutenant and will serve his country as a military officer after his studies at Oxford are completed; and

WHEREAS, while at Oxford, Greg Lippiatt intends to work on a master’s degree in Byzantine studies and plans to pursue doctoral studies in medieval history after his service as an Army officer; and

WHEREAS, a well-rounded student, Greg Lippiatt plays for the VMI rugby club, is the editor of VMI’s literary magazine, and serves as a battalion commander in the Corps of Cadets; he has also acted in four college plays and written for a military history journal; and

WHEREAS, as the 11th cadet to become a Rhodes Scholar, Greg Lippiatt continues the proud tradition of academic excellence, integrity, and leadership at the Virginia Military Institute; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Gregory E. Lippiatt on receiving a Rhodes Scholarship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Gregory E. Lippiatt as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and best wishes for his studies at Oxford.
