Commending homeschoolers in Virginia on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of homeschooling in the Commonwealth.

WHEREAS, this is a very special year for homeschoolers in Virginia, because 2009 marks the 25th anniversary of the passing in 1984 of the original home instruction legislation that resulted in § 22.1-254.1 of the Code of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is committed to academic excellence in education and to public policy that strengthens the family and the community; and

WHEREAS, Virginia was one of the first states to offer parents the opportunity to participate directly in their children's education through the option of home instruction; and

WHEREAS, thousands of families across the Commonwealth annually choose to homeschool their children; and

WHEREAS, the 25th anniversary celebration of homeschooling in Virginia will culminate in a visit to the Capitol in Richmond during the 2009 General Assembly Session, as well as a reception for students, parents, and the many supporters and friends of homeschoolers and homeschooling organizations; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of the Commonwealth and the members of the legislature are encouraged to participate in all events and activities that support the homeschooling community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate homeschoolers in Virginia on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of homeschooling in the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the homeschooling organizations in Virginia as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for the numerous contributions of homeschoolers and for their commitment to the advancement of education and the strengthening of families in the Commonwealth and throughout the United States.
