Commending Woodlawn Baptist Church on the occasion of its 140th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the faithful congregation of Woodlawn Baptist Church celebrated its 140th year of service to the Lord and the Fairfax County community on August 24, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Woodlawn Baptist Church has a fascinating history that developed alongside the history of early Virginia and the country; and

WHEREAS, Woodlawn Baptist Church first began as a Lord’s Day school as part of the original estate of Woodlawn, with services originally conducted in the parlor of the Woodlawn mansion, the home of Martha Washington’s granddaughter and George Washington’s nephew, designed by William Thornton, the architect of the first United States Capitol; and

WHEREAS, by 1868, Woodlawn Baptist was constituted as a church and received into the Potomac Association of Southern Baptists; and

WHEREAS, in 1872 the congregation rejoiced when their first meeting house was built; that building served the congregation for over 100 years until it was replaced by the current sanctuary in 1996; and

WHEREAS, Woodlawn Baptist Church has been served throughout its 140-year history by immensely dedicated and able pastors, who have provided visionary leadership, devout worship, meaningful Christian education, and enthusiastic ministry and community missions; and

WHEREAS, throughout its long history, Woodlawn Baptist Church has provided its devoted congregation, its neighbors, and the community a place to worship, to help others, and to grow in faith and service; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Woodlawn Baptist Church on the occasion of its 140th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Woodlawn Baptist Church as an expression of the General Assembly’s best wishes for future success in its ministry.
