HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 749 Celebrating the life of James R. Whorley.

WHEREAS, James R. Whorley, an exceptional educator and outstanding resident of Forest, died on December 27, 2008; and

WHEREAS, born July 16, 1948, in Bedford County, James R. "Jim" Whorley was the son of Eleanor and Ashby Lee Whorley, Sr., and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps; and

WHEREAS, Jim Whorley graduated with a bachelor's degree from Hampden-Sydney College and received a master's degree in school administration from Lynchburg College; and

WHEREAS, Jim Whorley began his career in education in 1970 at Brookville High School as a math teacher and football coach; he later served as an assistant principal at Rustburg Middle and Rustburg High Schools and in 1994 returned to Brookville High School as principal; and

  WHEREAS, Jim Whorley was the chairman of the State 2A Board Executive Committee of the Virginia High School League; and

WHEREAS, Jim Whorley was a faithful member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Forest and active in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, spending time with his family and friends brought much pleasure to Jim Whorley; he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and playing the banjo; and

WHEREAS, Jim Whorley will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by his wife of 21 years, Peggy Clowdis Worley; his mother; his son, James Vincent Whorley, and daughter-in-law, Rhonda; his stepson, E. Sidney Martin III, and stepdaughter-in-law, Cathy; his brother, Ashby Lee Whorley, Jr., and sister-in-law, Catherine; his four grandchildren; many other family members and friends; and the many students and educators he instructed and mentored; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a fine Virginian and public servant, James R. Whorley; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James R. Whorley as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
