HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 738
Commending the Oscar Smith High School football team.

WHEREAS, the 2008 Oscar Smith High School football team finished an outstanding season by winning the Group AAA Division 6 state championship on December 6, 2008; and

WHEREAS, the 2008 Tigers football team completed their season undefeated after clinching the state title before an enthusiastic crowd at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg by defeating Osbourn High School 54 - 24; and

WHEREAS, the exceptional 2008 Tigers football team was ranked among the top 10 nationally by USA Today and ESPN and won the first state championship for Oscar Smith High School in the school’s 55-year history; and

WHEREAS, in tough state playoff games, the Tigers defeated Oakton High School in a hard-fought game in the semifinals; and

WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the 2008 Tigers football team is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Richard Morgan and his staff; and the support of the students and faculty of Oscar Smith High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Tigers of Oscar Smith High School as the Group AAA Division 6 football state champions; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Richard Morgan as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the championship performance of the 2008 Oscar Smith High School football team.
