098197592WHEREAS, Lyndhurst Station was built on June 19, [ 1862
1882 ] , as a combined passenger and freight station; and
WHEREAS, Lyndhurst Station and the Lyndhurst community were named by George C. Milne, an executive of Shenandoah Valley railroad, to honor Lord Lyndhurst, a native of Boston, who was Lord Chancellor in Great Britain and the leader of the Conservative (Tory) Party; and
WHEREAS, Lyndhurst Station in Lyndhurst served as an integral part of the Shenandoah Valley Railroad system after the Civil War; and
WHEREAS, the Lyndhurst Station depot, still in excellent condition, is one of the remaining extant railroad stations in Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Lyndhurst Station and the community of Lyndhurst are directly connected with the Shenandoah Railroad and the station is privately owned although Norfolk Southern owns the land; and
WHEREAS, [ thirteen three ] years after the station was
built, worship services were held for the newly formed Lyndhurst Methodist
Church, and the station has served previously as the local post office and is
the main identifying building of the community of Lyndhurst; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and appropriate to recognize Lyndhurst Station for its historic place in Virginia’s history; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That Lyndhurst Station be recognized for its distinctive and historic place in Virginia history; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to Nancy Taylor Sorrells, chairwoman of the Augusta County Board of Supervisors, requesting that she further disseminate copies of this resolution to her constituents so that they may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter.
