2009 SESSION
WHEREAS, Lisa G. Kaplowitz, M.D., respected physician and the current public health director of the Alexandria Health District, is recognized for her outstanding service to her fellow citizens and the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Kaplowitz served as the Commonwealth’s first deputy commissioner for Emergency Preparedness and Response from August 2002 to July 2008; and
WHEREAS, due to Dr. Kaplowitz's exceptional leadership, Virginia has been recognized as one of the leading states for preparedness, having achieved the highest rating possible from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for Strategic National (pharmaceutical) Stockpile readiness and establishing a robust public health infrastructure for the ongoing surveillance and investigation of public health diseases and threats; and
WHEREAS, as the first director of the HIV/AIDS Center at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Dr. Kaplowitz was in the forefront of the development and growth of HIV clinical and training programs in the Richmond area and was responsible for establishing patient/caretaker protocols for AIDS patients; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Kaplowitz was named Woman of the Year at VCU in 1992, received the Leadership Metro Richmond Community Vision Award in 1999, was inducted into the Virginia Women’s Hall of Fame in 1992, and was honored by the Richmond Chapter of Hadassah as its Woman of Distinction in 2006; and
WHEREAS, an inspiration and mentor to her colleagues, Dr. Kaplowitz has worked tirelessly to improve the standards of health and safety in Virginia; and
WHEREAS, an innovative leader and exemplary physician, Dr. Kaplowitz has dedicated her life’s work to improving the quality of life for the citizens of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Lisa G. Kaplowitz, M.D., on her outstanding service as the deputy commissioner for Emergency Preparedness and Response and her valuable contributions to the field of HIV/AIDS; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lisa G. Kaplowitz, M.D., as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for her many accomplishments and best wishes in all her future endeavors.
