2009 SESSION
WHEREAS, the New Kent County Courthouse will celebrate 100 years of service to the citizens of New Kent County in 2009; and
WHEREAS, the residents of New Kent County held its court proceedings at Brick House on the York River from the formation of the county in 1654 until 1691; and
WHEREAS, in 1691 a courthouse and community tavern were constructed near the center of New Kent County at the site of the present courthouse; and
WHEREAS, the Colonial Clerk's Office and County Jail on the original site were burned to the ground in 1787 by John Price Posey, the overseer of George Washington's White House plantation in New Kent County; and
WHEREAS, tragically, the Colonial Courthouse itself was burned like many historic structures during the Civil War in 1862, but the building was salvaged and repaired by the community and utilized until a new courthouse was constructed in the early twentieth century; and
WHEREAS, in 1908 the New Kent County Board of Supervisors, after considering moving to a new location or continuing to renovate the Colonial Courthouse, decided to approve an expenditure of $6,664 for the construction of a new courthouse building on the original site; and
WHEREAS, in 1909 after the additional expenditure of $417.28 for a new rug, some coal, a stove, and four spittoons, the new New Kent County Courthouse was completed and put into service; and
WHEREAS, in 2009 the citizens of New Kent County will celebrate the historic centennial anniversary of the continuous use of the 1909 courthouse building and of court services at New Kent County Courthouse; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate New Kent County Courthouse on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to representatives of New Kent County Courthouse as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of the history and significance of the courthouse and its service to the citizens of New Kent County.
