WHEREAS, the 2008 James Wood High School girls’ doubles tennis team of Kari Pope and Headley Wilson capped an outstanding season by winning the Virginia High School League Group AA state tennis doubles championship before an enthusiastic crowd at Radford University on June 7, 2008; and

WHEREAS, the Region II doubles champion Colonels’ team won a decisive victory over Hidden Valley High School in the semifinals with scores of 6 - 4 and 6 - 4; and

WHEREAS, James Wood High School’s doubles team convincingly defeated Northside High School’s doubles team in the state final matchup with scores of 6 - 2 and 6 - 1; and

WHEREAS, James Wood’s entire tennis team played well throughout the year, and led by Kari Pope and Headley Wilson, the Colonels had a winning season and advanced to the regional playoffs for the first time; and

WHEREAS, Kari Pope and Headley Wilson worked hard throughout the season and the championship matches to win the first state championship of any kind in girls’ tennis for James Wood High School; and

WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of Kari Pope and Headley Wilson is a tribute to their talent, dedication, and perseverance; the leadership of Coach Rob Haskiell; and the support of the parents, student body, and faculty and leadership of James Wood High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Kari Pope and Headley Wilson on their outstanding 2008 season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to Kari Pope and Headley Wilson as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for their championship performance.
