HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 636
Commending the Handley High School girls’ tennis team.

WHEREAS, the 2008 Handley High School girls’ tennis team capped an outstanding season by winning the Virginia High School League Group AA state tennis championship before an enthusiastic crowd at Radford University on June 7, 2008; and

WHEREAS, taking its second consecutive and fourth overall win in the state tournament, the Region II champion Judges team from Winchester won a decisive victory over Spotswood High School, 5 - 2, in the semifinals; and

WHEREAS, for the second year in a row, the Handley High School girls’ tennis team beat its opponent 5 - 0 in the finals, playing against a tough Jamestown High School team; and

WHEREAS, despite the heat, the Judges’ hard work and practice throughout the season paid off in their 45th consecutive victory; and

WHEREAS, the entire team—Kaitlyn Bock, Taryn Burke, Elizabeth Gardiner, Mykenzie Garrett, Katherine Gordon, Anna Kuykendall, Sarah Moomau, Hannah Skedsvold, Lane Stickley, and Fionna Surette—worked hard and made significant contributions throughout the season and the championship matches; and

WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the 2008 Handley Judges is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Coach Terry Ewell and Assistant Coach Tommy Arthur; and the support of the parents, student body, the faculty, and leadership of Handley High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Judges from Handley High School on their outstanding 2008 season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Terry Ewell as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the championship performance of the 2008 Handley High School girls’ tennis team.
