HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 629
Celebrating the life of Sally Braun Ormsby.

WHEREAS, Sally Braun Ormsby, a director of the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District and a Fairfax County community activist, died on September 15, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Sally Braun was born in Naples, New York; graduated from Bryant & Stratton College in Buffalo, New York; and settled in Washington, D. C., in 1956, where she worked as a secretary for the Central Intelligence Agency until 1970; and

WHEREAS, in 1959 Sally Braun married Clayton Ormsby, and the couple have two wonderful children, Tyler and Alison; and

WHEREAS, Sally Ormsby was elected to the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District in 1999 and reelected in 2003 and 2007; and

WHEREAS, Sally Ormsby was the passionate leader of the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District's Green Group, which sponsored meetings to discuss conservation issues that were important to citizens and coordinated with environmental groups and the news media; and

WHEREAS, a hardworking community volunteer, Sally Ormsby served as a board member of the Fairfax Committee of 100, a board member and president of the Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Associations, and a member and three-time president of the Mantua Citizens Association; and

WHEREAS,  since 1977, Sally Ormsby was an enthusiastic member of the  League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area, chaired its environment committee, and was active in the organization's sponsorship of public forums; and

 WHEREAS, over the years, Sally Ormsby received awards and accolades for her many contributions, including Virginia's Mother of the Year by the American Mothers, Inc., in 1996 and The Washington Post Citizen of the Year in 2006, and she was the first recipient of the Sally Ormsby Environmental Stewardship Award created in her honor by the Fairfax County Park Authority in 2007; and

WHEREAS, Sally Ormsby was a faithful member of Providence Presbyterian Church, where she chaired the adult education committee and was active in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, for over 30 years, Sally Ormsby participated in numerous committees on business, education and schools, finance, parks and recreation, and community planning as a knowledgeable and articulate voice on behalf of her friends and neighbors in Fairfax County; and

WHEREAS, Sally Ormsby will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her loving husband and family, her numerous friends and admirers, and the citizens of Fairfax County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a fine community supporter and outstanding Virginian, Sally Braun Ormsby; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sally Braun Ormsby as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
