WHEREAS, Dick Price, the revered former football and track coach at Norfolk State University, died on February 23, 2009; and

WHEREAS, a native of Norfolk, Dick Price graduated from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) and came to Norfolk State University (NSU) as the head track coach and assistant football coach in 1964; and

WHEREAS, an outstanding coach and mentor, Dick Price lead the NSU track team to two Division II national track championships and was named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Track Coach of the Year from 1971 to 1974; he coached many excellent track athletes, including Olympic gold medalist Steve Riddick; and

WHEREAS, Dick Price was named head football coach in 1974 and coached the NSU Spartans to three consecutive CIAA championships and was named CIAA Football Coach of the Year in 1974 and 1975; fifty-three of Dick Price’s former football players went on to play professional football; and

WHEREAS, Dick Price remains Norfolk State University’s winningest football coach with a career record of 62 – 41 - 4; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from coaching football, Dick Price became associate athletics director and then athletics director at Norfolk State University, where he instituted an academic advisory council for athletes, a drug-testing program, and student-athlete handbook; and

WHEREAS, Dick Price received many awards and accolades for his tremendous accomplishments, including being named the Virginian Pilot’s “Sports Figure of the Decade” in 1979 and receiving the Norfolk Sports Club’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008; NSU’s current football stadium is named in Dick Price’s honor; and

WHEREAS, Dick Price was inducted into the NSU Athletics Foundation Sports Hall of Fame, the CIAA Hall of Fame, the Hampton Roads African American Sports Hall of Fame, and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, Dick Price leaves behind a monumental sports legacy at Norfolk State University, where he will be remembered for his competitive spirit, enthusiasm, and dedication to his players; and

WHEREAS, Dick Price will be greatly missed by his loving family, dear friends, and former players; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Dick Price, an outstanding coach and a fine Virginian; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dick Price as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
