2009 SESSION
WHEREAS, Ollie J. Amon, Jr., of Portsmouth, a respected citizen and community volunteer, died on August 14, 2008; and
WHEREAS, a native of Lawrenceville, Ollie Amon was born to loving parents Ollie James and Evelyn Browder Amon on March 22, 1926; and
WHEREAS, Ollie Amon graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, and entered The College of William and Mary but later that year joined the United States Navy and proudly served in the Pacific on the USS Bland; and
WHEREAS, Ollie Amon returned and finished a bachelor’s degree at The College of William and Mary and served for 32 years with the United States Navy as a civilian; he retired as a Naval Reserve officer; and
WHEREAS, a valued and dedicated public service employee, Ollie Amon received the United States Navy’s prestigious Superior Civilian Service Award for his work with the United States Navy; and
WHEREAS, Ollie Amon lived his faith through his works as an active member of Monumental United Methodist Church, where he sang in the chancel choir for more than 65 years; and
WHEREAS, Ollie Amon also graciously gave of his time and talents in the community to several organizations, including president and treasurer of the Portsmouth District United Methodist Men, the Bennetts Creek Ruritan Club, Navy Bean Counters, and The College of William and Mary Football Club; and
WHEREAS, Ollie Amon enjoyed spending time with his loving wife, Darlene Van Camp Amon; his children, Deborah, James, and the late Bruce; and his stepson Jerry; and
WHEREAS, Ollie Amon will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by his loving family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a respected citizen and outstanding Virginian, Ollie J. Amon, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ollie J. Amon, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
