Commending James E. Dooley.

WHEREAS, James E. Dooley is commended for his exemplary service as sheriff of Danville on the occasion of his retirement; and

WHEREAS, the Danville Sheriff’s Office provides valuable services to the City of Danville and is responsible for the city jail, court services, and process serving; and

WHEREAS, James (Jim) E. Dooley began his career with the Danville Police Department after his military service in Vietnam; he then moved to the Danville Sheriff’s Office, where he worked as a civil process server and chief deputy until he ran for sheriff; and

WHEREAS, elected as sheriff for the term beginning January 1, 1989, Jim Dooley has guided the Danville Sheriff’s Office with visionary leadership and wisdom for the past 20 years; and

WHEREAS, Jim Dooley developed several innovative programs including the inmate work crew program, which provides year-round work on the Little League baseball and softball fields; and

WHEREAS, Jim Dooley was also instrumental in bringing Project Lifesaver to Danville; Project Lifesaver helps to quickly locate lost people with Alzheimer’s Disease, Down Syndrome, or other health problems; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to excellence, Jim Dooley worked diligently to have the Danville Sheriff’s Office become accredited through the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC); less than 15 percent of the 400 law-enforcement agencies in the Commonwealth have attained VLEPSC accreditation; and

WHEREAS, Jim Dooley has given generously of his time and talents to various organizations in the community, including American Legion Post 325, VFW Post 647, and Elks Lodge #227; and

WHEREAS, Jim Dooley has served as president of the Westover Sertoma Club and board member of the Danville Little League, Virginia Sheriffs’ Association, and advisory board member of the Good News Jail and Prison Ministry; and

WHEREAS, Jim Dooley has faithfully served the City of Danville for over 30 years and looks forward to a rewarding retirement with his family and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend James E. Dooley for his outstanding service to the City of Danville on the occasion of his retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to James E. Dooley as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his public service.
