2009 SESSION
WHEREAS, John C. Walker is commended for his service as the Superintendent of Amherst County Public Schools; and
WHEREAS, John Walker received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia, a master’s degree from Lynchburg College, and a doctorate from the University of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, a lifelong educator, John Walker began his 32-year career in education as a teacher in 1976; and
WHEREAS, recognized for his administrative ability and leadership skills, John Walker was appointed Assistant Superintendent for Support Services for Amherst County Public Schools in 1998 and Superintendent in 2001; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Walker has worked diligently to ensure that all Amherst County Public Schools were accredited, and multipurpose buildings were constructed at all six elementary schools, library additions were completed at Temperance and Pleasant View Elementary Schools, a new Education Center was constructed at Monelison Middle School, and significant improvements were made to Amherst County High School; and
WHEREAS, committed to his profession and community, Dr. Walker has served as legislative cochair of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents, on the executive committee of the Virginia High School League, on the Lynchburg College School of Education board of advisors, on the board of directors of the Amherst County Public Schools Education Foundation, and as a member of the Amherst County Chamber of Commerce and the Amherst Rotary Club; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Walker has received many awards and accolades for his work on behalf of public education, including the Excellence in Education Award by the University of Virginia Curry School of Education and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Walker’s visionary leadership of Amherst County Public Schools has helped the students to excel and to achieve their full potential; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend John C. Walker, former Superintendent of Amherst County Public Schools; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John C. Walker as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his commitment to the students of Amherst County.
