WHEREAS, Leland D. Melvin is commended for his selection into the 19th Annual Dominion Resources, Inc., Strong Men & Women: Excellence in Leadership educational series; and

WHEREAS, the Strong Men & Women: Excellence in Leadership educational series recognizes annually nine prominent African Americans for their leadership and accomplishments and turns their life stories into curriculum sets that are distributed throughout schools and libraries during Black History Month; and

WHEREAS, the Strong Men & Women materials provide youth with inspiring examples of real people who have converted obstacles into opportunities and achieved leadership status in their chosen fields; and

WHEREAS, a native of Lynchburg, Leland Melvin graduated from Heritage High School in Lynchburg in 1982 and then earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Richmond in 1986 and a master’s degree in materials science engineering from the University of Virginia in 1991; and

WHEREAS, Leland Melvin made his first space flight in February 2008 as a member of the STS-122 mission that delivered the European Space Agency’s Columbus Laboratory to the International Space Station; and

WHEREAS, Leland Melvin is assigned as a mission specialist on the STS-129 crew, which is targeted for launch in October 2009, and which will deliver two Express Logistics Carriers to the International Space Station; and

WHEREAS, as comanager of NASA’s Educator Astronaut Program, Leland Melvin has traveled across the country, engaging thousands of students and teachers in the excitement of space exploration and inspiring them to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; and

WHEREAS, Leland Melvin has accomplished much through hard work, dedication, and perseverance and serves as an excellent role model for today’s youth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Leland D. Melvin for being selected for the 19th Annual Dominion Resources, Inc., Strong Men & Women: Excellence in Leadership educational series; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Leland D. Melvin as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his many accomplishments and best wishes in his future endeavors.
